You maintain regular dental examinations and cleanings, and despite excellent dental hygiene, your teeth still need cleaning. Why? What is plaque?

What Is Plaque?

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. It's mostly made up of saliva and food particles. Plaque can contain harmful acids that eat away at tooth enamel. These acids are produced by the bacteria in plaque after eating or drinking.

What Happens When Plaque Isn't Removed?

If plaque isn't removed, it can harden and turn into tartar. Tartar is a yellow or brown deposit that a dentist or dental hygienist removes during a dental cleaning. A way to think of tartar is as a grown-up version of plaque. Further, plaque (that isn't removed) can cause cavities or gum disease. Cavities are permanent damage to the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny holes that can become infected and painful. Gum disease is an infection of the gums that can damage the bones that support your teeth and cause tooth loss.

How Is Plaque Removed?

There are a few different ways to remove plaque from teeth. The first is to simply brush and floss regularly. This will help to remove plaque that has built up on the surface of the teeth. However, it will not remove plaque that has become stuck in between the teeth. In order to remove this plaque, you will need to use floss. Flossing can help reach the plaque stuck between the teeth, making it easier to remove. This is one of the reasons dentists always encourage you to brush and floss regularly.

You can also use a mouthwash that contains bacteria-fighting agents. These mouthwashes can help remove plaque built up on the surface of the teeth and in between the teeth.

Finally, professional dental cleanings can also remove plaque and tartar from teeth. During a professional cleaning, a dental professional will use special instruments to scrape away the plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth. By implementing these plaque-fighting methods, you can effectively remove plaque from your teeth and keep your smile looking its best.
