Dental emergencies can range from a persistent toothache to a painful dental infection. At El Dorado Family Dental, we offer emergency dentistry in El Dorado Hills so you can receive the urgent care you need. If you have an urgent dental problem, please get in touch with our dental office so Dr. Albik or Dr. Rika can see you immediately. Even if you’re unsure your situation needs urgent care, call us. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Here are four common types of dental emergencies.

#1 Persistent Toothache

A toothache can point to deep decay, infection, or another problem that needs prompt treatment. If you’ve had a persistent toothache or severe tooth sensitivity, please contact us so we can relieve your pain and treat your toothache.

#2 A Broken or Chipped Tooth

Many people have accidents or injuries that result in broken or chipped teeth. First and foremost, please get in touch with us immediately so we can determine if you need an emergency appointment. Next, please collect the chipped or broken piece of the tooth, if possible, and bring it to your appointment.

Over-the-counter pain relievers can help with discomfort, and an ice pack may help with swelling or soreness. You can place the ice pack outside the cheek closest to the tooth. If the tooth has a sharp or jagged edge, you can apply dental wax or sugarless gum to protect your mouth from any cuts.

#3 A Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is an infection that can be very dangerous if not treated quickly. Untreated cavities, injuries, or previous dental work can cause a dental abscess. The infection can spread throughout the mouth and enter the bloodstream, leading to many other health problems. If you have a fever, swollen or bleeding gums, tooth pain, or a bump on the gums, please get in touch with us for prompt dental care. Treatments for a dental abscess include antibiotics, root canal therapy, and in severe cases, extraction.

#4 Missing or Loose Restorations

A missing or loose restoration––like a crown or filling––should be replaced to avoid dental damage, wear, decay, or infection. Please bring the restoration to your emergency dental care appointment if possible. Our team can provide you with a replacement restoration to complete your smile.
