There’s nothing quite like the feeling of fresh, clean teeth that follows an appointment with a friendly hygienist or dentist. But having our teeth professionally cleaned is more than just a great feeling; it’s essential for good dental health and our overall wellness.

Regular dental cleanings allow your dentist to monitor your oral health, prevent dental diseases, and keep your smile in tip-top shape. Whether you visit the dentist regularly or it’s been a while since your last cleaning, you can always count on our team to provide gentle, compassionate care of the highest quality. Our dental office is equipped with state-of-the-art technology so your appointments can be more streamlined and comfortable than ever.

If you need to schedule a dental cleaning, please call or text us at (530) 444-4944. You can also conveniently book your appointment online. We’re available for appointments Monday through Friday, and we even offer Saturday appointments for your convenience.

Why Are Regular Dental Cleanings Important?

Our El Dorado Family Dental team encourages patients of all ages to receive regular dental cleanings to keep their teeth and gums healthy, functional, and problem-free. The American Dental Association (ADA) states that regular dental cleanings help prevent diseases––such as tooth decay and gum disease––that can impact your overall health.

Regular dental cleanings can ultimately help with the following:

  • Prevent cavities and tooth infections
  • Prevent periodontal (gum) disease
  • Reduce the risk of dementia
  • Reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke
  • Catch oral cancers early
  • Prevent tooth stains
  • Prevent bad breath
  • Prevent plaque and tartar buildup
  • Reveal subtle changes between dental visits

Our dentists, Dr. Mohamad Albik and Dr. Rika Prodhan-Ashraf, offer comprehensive dental care so you can have the best chance to enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile. We can help prevent oral diseases and keep your smile on track throughout every life stage.

What Happens During a Regular Dental Cleaning?

At El Dorado Family Dental, we believe prevention is key to lifelong oral health. Each patient has unique oral health needs and concerns, and the type of cleaning we provide may vary per patient.

We offer standard prophylaxis cleanings, scaling and root planing, and periodontal maintenance cleanings. All cleaning sessions begin with a thorough examination to look for signs of cavities, enamel erosion, gum inflammation and disease, oral cancers, and other irregularities. During your cleaning, your dentist or hygienist can also find early signs of potential issues with your teeth, gums, or other areas of your mouth and correct them before they progress or become more serious.

Prophylaxis Cleanings

Most patients with healthy gums receive a prophylaxis cleaning during their routine visits. A prophylaxis cleaning removes plaque and tartar from all dental surfaces using special instruments, like a dental scaler or water stream. We then floss and polish the teeth and finish the session with a fluoride treatment if needed.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from between the teeth and below the gumline and helps reduce gum inflammation. Cleaning the gum pockets helps treat gingivitis and periodontitis, and this type of cleaning can be completed in one dental visit. Root planing smooths the tooth roots, allowing the gums to reattach to the teeth and eliminating gum pockets.

Periodontal Maintenance Cleanings

Periodontal maintenance cleanings help treat gum disease. Like scaling and root planing, these cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup from dental surfaces and gum pockets and smooth the roots. However, patients with gum disease may require these cleanings more frequently to maintain gum health and manage periodontal disease.

Practicing Good Oral Hygiene at Home

Professional cleanings and excellent oral hygiene at home go hand-in-hand. To keep your teeth and gums healthy between dental visits, we recommend:

  • Brushing twice daily with ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste
  • Flossing at least once daily to remove food particles and plaque from between teeth
  • Avoiding sugary drinks and snacks that can cause cavities
  • Drinking plenty of water to maintain healthy saliva production that flushes away harmful oral bacteria
  • Visiting our El Dorado Hills dental office for preventive exams and cleanings

Our dentists always offer advice and recommendations for the best brushing and flossing techniques, approved dental products, and more.
